Matthew  Hoenig
Matthew R. Hoenig, 81, a longtime resident of Avon Lake, Ohio, passed away February 11, 2020. Matt was born in Lockport, NY, the son of the late Helen C. (Burke) and Edward J. Hoenig.
He graduated from DeSales Catholic High School in Lockport in 1956 and went on to receive his B.S. degree from John Carroll University. He continued his education at Cleveland Marshall School of Law and Duquesne University Law School in Pittsburgh, PA where he resided for 17 years while working in the steel industry in various managerial positions. Matt was transferred back to the Cleveland area in 1984 and retired in 1996. He was an active member of the Steel Industry Systems Association, the National Association of Accountants, and the Association of Systems Management.
Matt was an active church member for many years and a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years and was always an avid reader of history. After retiring, he obtained his Captain's license from the Merchant Marines, joined the Huron Yacht Club and spent most summers boating throughout the Great Lakes and most winters traveling to countries with warmer weather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Teresa Archie Hoenig; son, Joseph Edward of Gotha, FL; a daughter, Mary Katherine (Barrett) Ward of Bay Village, Ohio; and three grandchildren who he adored, Anna Hoenig Ward, Emma Harlan Ward and Duncan Archie Ward; as well as his sister-in-law, Doris Hoenig; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Matt was predeceased by his brother, Edward J. Hoenig; and sister, Helenbeth Hoenig.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Holy Spirit Church, 410 Lear Rd. in Avon Lake on Monday, February 17th at 12 noon. Visitation with the family will start at 10 AM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Matt's name would be appreciated to either Seidman Cancer Center, University Hospital, 11100 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106, or John Carroll University, School of Business, 1 John Carroll Blvd., University Heights, Ohio 44118.

Matt was Helenbeth's favorite and he always took good care of her. I'm sure he is being rewarded, even though he will be missed here on earth.
