Mark James Leitner Obituary

Ft. Meyers, FL - Mark James Leitner passed away on December 1, 2025, in Port Charlotte, Florida, at the age of 80 following a courageous battle with dementia. Born on May 8, 1945, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Helen Leitner, brother, Thomas, mother-in-law, Loretta Keleher, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

In February of 1976, he married the love of his life, Suzanne. Their 50-year marriage was a true partnership, marked by deep respect, quiet strength, and a steadfast commitment that inspired everyone blessed to know them.

As a father, Mark was a constant source of love, encouragement, and gentle guidance to his daughters, Catherine Elizabeth (Jose Santos) and Emily Anne (Drew Olczak). He poured his heart into raising them alongside Suzanne, always believing in their potential, and celebrating their achievements. He found immense joy in being "Pop-Pop" to Sofia, whose laughter and light brought him profound happiness in his final years.

Mark's passion for learning led him to earn a BA in English from Canisius College and MA in Education from D'Youville University. He found his true calling behind the microphone beginning in 1975 at WIZR in Johnstown, NY, and WENT in Gloversville, NY, and later during his remarkable 23-year tenure at WBEN where Mark became a trusted voice in Western New York broadcasting. After a brief break, he returned to the airwaves in 2003 with WNED and WBFO. Throughout his career, he earned numerous Associated Press awards, recognition of his integrity, professionalism, and deep love for the craft.

Mark proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970.

He was known for his gentle nature, his quiet dignity, his terrific sense of humor, and a reassuring presence that always made others feel seen, heard, and valued. He will be remembered not only for his contributions to broadcasting, but for the love, generosity, and courage he carried through every season of his life.
