Text size

William Schumacher, 82, of Barnstable, died on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Wingate of Brewster, MA. Born in Lockport, NY, he was the only child of the late Walter and Louise (Miller) Schumacher.
A graduate of Lockport High School, he served in the Army in Korea from 1954-1956. He received a Business Administration degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. Bill's career focused on financial management positions in not-for-profit organizations. He worked for Crestwood Children's Center in Rochester, New York, Girl Scouts of the USA, National Field Center Dallas TX and retired as Financial Controller with Grace Presbyterian Village in Dallas, TX.
Bill is survived by his wife of 32 years, Polly Dana-Schumacher. They met while both were employed by Girls Scouts of the USA. Bill and Polly retired to Barnstable on Cape Cod in 1999 and spent the first couple of years renovating her family home. Bill was a volunteer with Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod and enjoyed the friends he made helping out in the Thrift Shop and providing quiet comfort as a patient care visitor.
In addition to his wife Polly, two children also survive Bill from his marriage to Mary Drees. Jeffery Schumacher, wife, Terri and their daughters, Dana and Amy of Rochester, NY; and Karen and her husband, Mike Schaver of Lakeport CA.
The family thanks the staff at Wingate of Brewster and Broad Reach Hospice Nurse, Lucy Elmer, for their compassionate care and support while Bill was a resident there.
A family memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Donations of remembrance may be made to orphandog.org, alzheimerscapecod.org Barnstable Land Trust at blt.org. Words of comfort may be sent to his family at www.MorrisOConnorBlute.com.
