Samuel F. Ward, the retired president of Ward, Beals and McCarthy of Lockport, NY, passed away on November 15, 2017. He was born in Lockport, NY, on May 28, 1923.
A resident of East Amherst, NY, he was a graduate of Lockport High School and attended Notre Dame University before joining the US Army during World War II. Mr. Ward was commissioned a lieutenant in the armored branch and served in Germany with the First Light Armored Division.
Mr. Ward joined the family business, then Ward Brothers Mill Supply Co., Inc., in 1947. He was the third generation of the Ward family to enter the business, and became president of the company in 1959. While president, Mr. Ward instituted a profit sharing retirement plan for employees, long before most other businesses. In 1990, the industrial supply business was sold to Trumbull Industries of Warren, OH. The surviving business is NetPlus Alliance Inc., a buying group for industrial distributors. He retired as Chairman in 2006.
Mr. Ward was a director of M&T Bank and First Empire Corporation from 1978 to 1993. During that time he served on numerous committees, including the Executive Committee.
He was also a director of the Lockport Town & Country Club, the Country Club of Buffalo, the Tuscarora Club of Lockport and Spur, Inc. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of both the YMCA and YWCA of Lockport. In 1980, Mr. Ward was the Chairman for the building fund campaign for the expansion of Lockport Memorial Hospital. That campaign raised over $20 million. As a result of the success of that effort, he was named 'Man of the Year' by the National Conference of Christian and Jews, Lockport, in 1982.
To quote him, "golf was my passion and greatest frustration". He was the Club Champion at Lockport Town & Country Club a number of times and had holes in one at Pebble Beach Golf Links and the Country Club of Buffalo. He was also a member of country clubs in Delray Beach, FL and Tucson, AZ.
His wife of 53 years, Geraldine Wilson Ward, died July 18, 2003. He was also predeceased by a son Garrett B. Ward in 1973. Mr. Ward is survived by numerous cousins and nieces and nephews.
