Ronald's Story

Text size

It is with great sadness , Ronald ' Hayenehs' John Styres, was called home by the Creator on September 24, 2017, at St. Catharines General Hospital, while surrounded by his children.
Ron was born March 16, 1933, to John and Bella(Martin) Styres in Ohsweken, Ontario. He was a member of the Cayuga tribe, Wolf Clan of the Six Nations Reservation.
Ron enjoyed country music, westerns, crossword puzzles, restaurants, reminiscing about days long ago but his family was what he enjoyed the most. His family was his true passion, his children and grandchildren especially. He gave each one of them their own nickname when they were born. They were nicknames that have stuck with them throughout their entire lives.
Ron worked for various farms in Niagara County, before returning to Canada in 1982. Some of them were: Hobbs, Kappus, Fitches, Singer, Horning, and Niagara. Ron travelled whereever there was work, regardless of the weather, if there was work then he was there. In his latter years, he enjoyed horticulture and landscaping, often spending seasons in Kanastsiohareke, working beside his mentor and dear friend Tom Porter. He finally retired last year after his legs would no longer carry him. But he did try to visit Kanastsiohareke as often as he could since his retirement.
Ron was predeceased by his mother and father, John and Bella (Martin) Styres; his sister, Lorna Thomas, his brothers; Karmen Stevens and Clark Styres; as well as a son, Orven Styres.
He is survived by his sisters; Edith (Pete) Styres and Holley Longboat, his children; Rhonda Jackie (Oliver) Labonte, Jean Marie Jones, Vitorrio Styres, Rogene Jody (Michelle) Styres, Rory Joel (Teresa) Styres, Rona Chop Styres, and Rosanne Styres, 22 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Viewings were held on September 25th and 26th, 2017, at his son Vitorrios house on 4th Line in Six Nations. Funeral was held September 27th at Sour Springs Long House on 3rd Line in Six Nations.
