Peter J.'s Story

Peter James Sharp, a retired Lockport businessman and longtime member and officer of the Olcott Yacht Club, died Sunday at Niagara Hospice after a brief illness. He would have celebrated his 72nd birthday on December 8th.
Mr. Sharp was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and emigrated to the United States in 1952 with his parents, Peter and Wilhelmina Sharp, and older brother, Eric.
After graduating from Lockport Senior High School in 1963 he worked briefly at Harrison Radiator before joining the staff at M. Carter Decor on West Avenue.
Mr. Sharp eventually became a partner and then owner of the business, which he operated until his retirement in 2011.
He and the former Marie Cramer were married In 1967 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 11. After retiring, Mr. And Mrs. Sharp spent six months of the year at the home they built on Olcott Harbor, racing and cruising their sailboat, 'Crew's Control,' and six months at their winter home in North Fort Myers, FL.
Mr. Sharp joined the Olcott Yacht Club in 1977 and in the ensuing 40 years served in numerous offices, being elected to the Board of Directors three times and as Commodore in 1982, 1992 and 2005. He was awarded the Seneca Trophy for outstanding service four times and three times honored with the Christie Trophy for sportsmanship.
In addition, he chaired thelLong-range planning committee, served on the nominating and haulout committees and spent many hours maintaining the sailboats, coaching boats and motors used in the club's junior sailing program.
Mr. Sharp's devotion and service to the OYC was recognized in 2011 with the award of lifetime membership.
In addition to his wife, Marie, he is survived by sons, David of Indianapolis, IN. and Andrew of Burt; grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah and Ethan Sharp and Mason Brownlee; and his brother, Eric.
A Celebration of Life will be held for friends and family on Friday afternoon, starting at 2 PM at the home of Andrew Sharp at 2505 Coomer Rd. in Burt.
The family asks that donations be made in his name to Niagara Hospice or the OYC Mantle Club.
