Patricia Marie Lanighan

Patricia Marie Lanighan (nee Smith) passed away on August 24, 2019, under the loving care of her family. Born in Niagara Falls on November 7, 1937, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Bryce) Smith, both Scottish immigrants.
A graduate of the former LaSalle High School, she earned a nursing degree from Niagara University in 1959 as had her sister, Myra, before her.
Shortly after graduation, she married Matthew C. Lanighan at St. John de LaSalle Church in Niagara Falls, NY, on June 13, 1959. Matt, a 1956 Niagara graduate, was serving as an engineering officer on a radar picket ship, the USS Lookout. Paddy and Matt started their young lives together in the Navy in Providence, Rhode Island. They then resided in Niagara Falls before moving to Lockport in 1961 and ultimately to her present address in 1962 where she and Matt lived their lives and raised three children, Kevin, Tim and Tracy. They were fortunate to have neighbors who were good friends and grew old with many people looking out for them.
Paddy worked as a nurse in maternity at Lockport Memorial Hospital for many years and enjoyed college club, friends and family. After retirement she travelled the world extensively with Matt and her childhood and lifelong friend, Nancy, and her husband, Cork Dinan. She was very active in helping look after grandchildren and was primary caregiver during Matt's illness. In later years, she loved playing bridge and participated in several bridge groups including a special group that met on Wednesdays and played in each other's homes. She also enjoyed the company of good friends for Tuesday breakfast and occasional Friday dinners. She was quite fond of the ladies who included her in these activities, especially after Matt's passing in 2011. She was a lifelong parishioner at St. John's in Lockport and frequently attended daily mass.
She is predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Matthew; and is survived by her children, Kevin W. (Kelly) Lanighan, MD of Williamsville, Timothy B. (Susan) Lanighan of Newfane and Tracy (Ken) Lewandowski of Lockport; grandmother of Sean Matthew, Casey and Brendan Lanighan of Williamsville, T.Sgt. Ryan Patrick (Ashton) Lanighan of Barker, Michael William (Emily) Lanighan, Ph.D. of Houston, Amy and Bryce Timothy Lanighan of Newfane; and great-grandmother to Erinn, Liam and Owen of Barker. She was also the sister-in-law of William Lanighan of Newfane and Ann Horst of Pittsburgh. Her sister, Myra Milleville, of Niagara Falls died in November 2018.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass to be celebrated Saturday morning at 10 AM in St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, 168 Chestnut Street, Lockport, NY. Friends and family will gather following the service. It was Paddy's wish that her body be donated to the Anatomical Gift Program at the University of Buffalo.
Memorials in her memory may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4676 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094, or Niagara University, Institutional Advancement, P.O. Box 2008, Niagara University, NY 14109.

I am so sorry for your loss. Paddy & Matt were good friends to me and my family when we were in Lockport. I lost contact after we moved to S. Carolina, but never forgot her. I will truly miss her as well. My deepest condolences and prayers for you and your family.
