Kalista Small Lehrer, 81, of Newfane, NY, passed away in her home on November 29, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Cyril and Gertrude Small of Lockport, NY.
Ms. Lehrer was a 1953 graduate of Sodus Central School in Sodus, NY, and a 1957 graduate of Geneseo State Teachers College (now SUNY Geneseo). She received a Masters Degree in French from Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada, and taught French in the Lockport High School for over 30 years. In 1975 she married G. John Lehrer of Newfane, NY, who predeceased her in 1996. Ms. Lehrer enjoyed nature and was a long-time active member of both the Foothills Trail Club and the Finger Lakes Trail Conference. She served as President of the Niagara Frontier Botanical Society, and for many years volunteered at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. She was active in St. Bridget's Catholic Church, where she taught bible study classes and was a member of the choir. She graduated from the four-year Catholic Biblical School in 2000, traveling to Israel, Jordan, Turkey and Greece as part of her studies, became the first director and a dedicated volunteer of the Biblical School's Alumni Association, and attended a monthly book club with emphasis on feminist theology. She was a lover of classical music, supporting the Buffalo Philharmonic and WNED among others.
She is survived by three brothers, Leslie Small (Loan Anh) of Kennett Square, PA, Duane Small (Joyce) of Syracuse, NY, and Kenneth Small (Adair) of Chicago, IL; a nephew and three nieces; and six grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM, December 18th, at St. Bridget's Church, 3455 Ewings Road, Newfane, NY.
Donations in her honor may be made to the Newfane Food Pantry, Friends of the Iroquois Wildlife Refuge, or the Foothills Trail Club.
