John's Story

Text size

John Barry Semo died suddenly at his home with his family on Christmas Eve. John was 48. John is the son of Patricia Barry and the late Richard Semo; as well as the brother of the late Jennifer Semo; the husband of Lisa Candino Semo; and the father of Lauren, Sophia, Daniel and the late Benjamin. John's extended family includes Patricia's husband, Charles Secord; cousin, Bridgie Hogeland; late aunt, Maureen Barry; aunt, Kathy Barry-Wacaser; aunt, Ruth Ann Semo Abel; and uncle, Jack Abel.
John graduated in 1987 from Desales High School in Lockport, NY and shortly thereafter joined the US Air Force. Subsequent to his time in the military John entered the field of data processing in the Tampa, FL area. In 1989, he moved back to WNY and continued in the same field. In 1998, John chose to pursue a career in Logistics and Consulting Services while working for the Tower Group which was later purchased by Fedex where he remained until 2009. John was noticed and pursued by many organizations in the Logistics business. In 2009, John joined Mohawk Global Logistics, an organization that felt like home to him. John excelled at Mohawk and last year became its Regional Sales Director responsible for six offices stretching from Newark, NJ to Cleveland, OH.
John, a Certified Customs specialist, was formerly the treasurer of the Buffalo World Trade Association, and a graduate of Leadership Niagara. John was a member of the U.B. Newman Center.
Therein lies the summary of John's life, but this doesn't come close to telling the story of who he was. His graciousness, unending smile and extended hand were cherished by many. John was an avid bowler and ran a monthly mixed couples league at the Clarence Bowling Academy known far more for its sociability than its bowling prowess. No matter what troubles were before any of us, seeing John's big smile and open arms raised everyone's spirits for a fun evening. John's professional technical skills were a given; it was his acute ability to read people and gently react that made him so good at what he did. He was a magnet for good friends, customers and professional associates. Those who knew him find it difficult to say his name without a smile being conjured up by some fond memory or another. John was, in today's vernacular, that guy, that dad, that husband, that friend. Quick to lend a hand or listen to friend's problem over a beer, John's death has created a gaping hole in the hearts and souls of all of those who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December 30th at 1 PM at the University of Buffalo Newman Center, 495 Skinnersville Rd. He will be Interred in Clarence Fillmore Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sophia and Daniel Semo Educational Fund and sent to: Lisa Casey, Bank of Akron, 9865 Main St., Clarence, NY 14031.
